why the fuck should someone who busts their ass and takes all kinds of financial risks to earn a good income have it taken away to support some piece of shit who has no ambition nor drive to do anything but sit home and watch the view and collect welfare.

        A millionaire makes over $19,000 a week.

        They won't miss it.

I totally agree but you are assuming that everyone in a low tax bracket has no ambition. We are a capitalist country and therefore the shitty jobs are just as necessary to keep this economy going. I know plenty of people who work their asses off and make very little.

I understand but I don't see how you necessarily relate "busting ass" to the wealthy... I'm sure they have their own version but busting ass just doesn't sound characteristic to the majority of those that are wealthy. Besides, at those types of salaries, what is busting ass???

Yeah, but these people are few and far between. Im just getting into the real world now after a year of living on the beach/ski bumming working dead end jobs. 90% of the people I worked with (servers and kitchen crew/ landscapers) were deadbeats just looking for the best way to get by. Yeah in landscaping we work our asses off, but for most of these people its just to buy the next 6er of Bud or a couple lines of blow. Certainly not to save up for a house, or support a kid, or whathaveyou like you champion these people to be doing. And that was for the people who had enough of a brain to hold a job, my landscaping company probably went through 10 or so deadbeats who didnt last more than 1-2 weeks in my 6 month tenure there. It really does come down to a problem with motivation...just working hard doesnt mean you have as much motivation as the guy making millions....

You ever hang out with a guy who makes a millions dollars, I bet you dont cause theyre usually working. Everyone equates busting ass with digging a ditch, when in reality most of the people making 6 figures in this country are "busting ass" 80+ hours a week in meetings, on the phone, traveling to conferences, etc. Sure its not lifting 50 pounds all day, but constantly doing things for work, for waaaay longer hours than most manual labor jobs, in my book counts as busting ass.

my school had a program who brought successful alumni back to campus to talk to us. one was an electrical engineer who started up his own business and was working 80 hour weeks until it got off the ground. He made and sold the technology for those nice projectors used in classrooms before it was common. He put a lot of himself and his assets to risk and did work hard. Now he is quite, quite wealthy and might not work more than 50 hours/week now, but he'd be pretty upset for the government taking away from him to give to others.

the other guy who spoke on the same day was a VP of the media company that has deals with eminem and others... i forget the name, but he worked for years in the mailroom to earn his way up, and too has worked 80 hour weeks to be where he is. he may not have that hard of a life now, and be rich, but he earned his place.

Like Fifedog said, is someone wants to just get by, they can and if they are uneducated/untrained, they may have hard manual labor but that doesn't mean they really put in that much more effort. Going through school, risking one's future, working long hours just to make better success in the long run is much more reason to be rewarded.

Yes, I admit my last post was somewhat emotion driven. I don't know any millionares but I do know a few of people that equate to the details you stated. My present professor is very pro-tax-the-rich and he is admitedly all the way left. As I've mentioned, I lean right, but I don't see why a fractional tax on the wealthy would be such a conflicting issue. Then again, tax is a HUGE issue regardless of your salary, your placement on the BS Likert Scale, your party etc... so. Thread on....

Its because whenever someone without money comments on someone with money they act as if because they have it already, its not a big deal to spend it. Once you earn it, you dont have the same mentality. 5 grand is 5 grand, no matter which way you slice it. I dont know anyone, regardless of class or income, who will willingly just give it up to fund someone elses education, welfare, etc for nothing. Its not even a gift...

There are alot of issues regarding this. My brother's wife works at a local SS office and you got (plug your own color/bigotry/etc) bitches walking in "pimped" out in Baby Phat jeans, purses and all the matches... I'm not too huge on welfare although I've never needed it, somewhat. Outside of that, why would the wealthy, product of BOTH their efforts and sacrifices and what this country makes available, be so against allowing/sponsoring a program which would allow those that wish to acheive what they did to exist; by way of a small fraction of a tax on their income?

Wait, what are we talking about again....?
