Woo-hoo! Sony cuts the price of the PS3 by $100

Excellent! Sony is discontinuing the sale of the 40GB PS3 for $399, and the 80GB will now retail for $399 in its place.

I think it might be time to snag me up one!

Updated twice: Finally, we’ve got ourselves a console war. Sony has been stuck in third place for a while. But today at its E3 press conference in Los Angeles, the company said it would shave $100 off the cost of its most expensive PlayStation 3 model. The move goes further than Microsoft’s $50 price cut […]

Wow. I think my 80g was like $699 when I got it. Thats an awesome price. Is it still the cheapest blu ray player on the market, to boot?

Nope, they have Blu-ray players for like $349 now, I think some might even be down around $299.

But I was reading somewhere else that the format still isn't taking off, because 1080p upconverting DVD players are still dominating the player market. They make standard def DVDs look almost as good as Blu-ray (they really do), and people aren't ready to start re-buying all of their DVDs yet. I have just over 400 DVDs, and I know there's people out there with a lot more than that.

theres a lot of people that say the ps3's "upconverter" is as good if not better than the standalone dvd players.

its important to note that these 80GB PS3s being released in september for $400 WONT have backwards compatibility with PS2 games, just like the current 40GB PS3, and unlike the current 80GB PS3.

Other than that, yeah its good they are cutting the price.

In terms of the upconversion business with DVDs and comparing them to blu-ray quality, I can say first hand that there is a very noticable difference between a blu-ray movie and a DVD upscaled to 1080p. It's not to say that the DVD looks bad, it's just that the blu-ray looks significantly better IMO. With that said, I don't think I would re-purchase a movie on blu-ray that i already owned on DVD unless it had some really incredible effects that could benefit from the clarity of blu-ray.

edit: they are also releasing a TV show and movie store by tomorrow. you can buy or rent movies from many big name movie studios.
