I cant complain. We arent stupid busy, but there is no slack time. I'm bringing a few old Porsches back to life so when normal maintenance business is slow, I work on those.

don't they tend to tatal most of the cars that are in snow related crashes? (ie too much damage)
(a tech i worked with from the PNW, told me that. )

Naaa. Its usually just people sliding around and bumping into each other. We don't ever really get snowed on that hard. We do get cold rain then ice though.

Meh, I'm seeing about the same amount of work. 55-65 hours a week.

Kind of surprising considering the recession, I have seen an increase in service downgrades lately though. But it's still work.

hehe, I used to sell tons of dirtbike parts but then i stopped breaking things so i stopped buying things so I ran out of stuff to sell.:)

I dont. God I am afraid to go near one of those cars. I almost bought an '79 Carrera a month ago and I'm glad I didnt. I'll stick to my BMW's. Porsches get very expensive. I've restored 4 old P-cars and watching the bills add up is... scary.

What do you have though? The owner of my shop is a Porsche nut and is crazy about little tid-bits like turbo calipers, sport seats, and date-matched 16" Fuchs. He's got.... 25 Porsches or something like that? He spends silly money on those things.

Im in the same field..I work in a Porsche shop up here, and right now we just have out big projects to coast us through the winter. Some service work, but it has dried up a lot. My side work has been going through the roof though..cant keep up with it...

Carreras are great cars...you just have to watch what you are getting into.

Dont ever buy beat up ones, because then you end up spending $100,000 to get it right.

I have seen plenty of very nice ones sell for about 20k, and they need very little to keep them going.

This post sums it up for me too. I have TONS of side work on people's cars that dont take their cars to shops for service. Only close friends and references of friends, and only BMW's-- very few exceptions.

I restored a chocolate brown/gold '75 Carerra between January and February. I got some good seat time during the process, and that car is nothing short of amazing. They did a great job with that car for the day and age. Considering that it is just a 2.7l lump in the back, it goes nicely.

We have an '84 Carrera 3.2l in now for the clean-up process. It is a rocket. Very nice.

I've seen my fill of beat up ones. We have a northern daily driven '73 911t with a hotted-up carbed 2.4l motor. I think I spent two weeks (off and on) making panels and welding that thing back together. We now have a Katrina car in the shop, a '78 SC. I never knew that salty water could do that much damage to a stationary metal object in a garage..

Needless to say, I would never do that much work to my own car. I'd rather start with a better piece.

I guess the shop I work at is apparently down about 35%, but others in town are laying off techs.
I only worked 45 minutes today, I guess I'm just doing my part to cut costs. According to my boss one of the major dealerships in town only sold 2 cars last month, might be a good time to snap up an FJ cruiser!

I don't work right now, but I went back to tell them I'd be back for Christmas, and it looked like a slow Monday on Saturday. It's retail so Monday is the slowest day. They had about 6 people working instead of the usual 15 or so, and no one had anything to do still
