many city's are doing this, a water line thats lived for longer than 50 years needs to be redone. I think I have done plenty of research I put the shit in for 10 years in city's. I bet if you do your research you will find there is lots of lead joint (lead used to seal the pipes) and lead pipes running from the main to the homes, especially in the older parts of the city. That shit needs to come out and be replaced.
Also if you have combined sewer (the storm run off and sanitary run together) which I bet you do for anything put in before 1990, the feds have passed a law back in 1990 or 91, that all sewer systems in the country must be separated by 2015 or the CSO program (Combined Sewer Overflow). This was mandated by the EPA, as when there is a lager rain storm it will over load the system and the over flows run to your rivers and wash human waste into them, thus the separation was mandated. I bet if you go and look at a place that has been redone you will see a fish or "drains to a water way" on the storm grates. Go to a place that has not had the revamp work yet and you wont see that on the castings, as all that run off still has to run to the treatment plant. Yes its also cheaper for the city as it dose not have to treat all the storm run off. So while you are in there with most places are redoing the water main as well even if its a bit newer.
