Its clear you have it stuck that you simply wont like fixed gear bikes, and thats fine but you still dont seem to get a few simple things.Exactly. What makes 1 gear better than 21? What makes no brakes better than F/R brakes? I'm not trying to say fixed gear bikes are bad, I'm just trying to say I don't see a single advantage to them. You have to sacrifice acceleration for top speed, or vice versa; no need to do that with gears. You also have zero brakes, as opposed to 2 brakes. WHY?!?!?!?
On a road bike exactly how many gears do you actually use? I know I only used the 54 tooth ring in the front and 3 in the back, which surprisingly almost averaged the same gear inch of what I rode on my fixed street bike. The only people Ive seen use all them, and use them well, were some Cat 1 racers but they were so strong they could be on anything and drop all other riders.
Also, why are you stuck on acceleration? How many people or instances can you think of where you have to get to the top speed your gearing allows, quickly? Unless you are racing thats just not normal. Besides, from stop light to stop light, any half way competent rider should be able to sprint to their top speed in a short distance on roughly 80 gear inches which is more than enough to have a decent top speed in traffic.
Lastly, brakes and a fixed drivetrain are not mutually exclusive. Since you dont need a rear brake wouldnt a fixed drive train that you can began to slow with your legs, matched with a front brake be just as good, if not better, than two regular brakes?Comment

I'm not trying to get an attitude, or change anyone's mind. Just trying to understand a fad that, so far, has me confused. I'm not hating on any of you, just pointing out what I see from my perspective and asking 'why?'. I'm not that familiar with bikes, so my knowledge of fixies is limited. Hence me asking the whole 'why?' thing. So get your panties out of a bunch and calm down.Comment

I think that I may look into this and at least give it a try. I usually only ride my bike to save wear and tear on my car in the summer when I'm just going up into town. I'm fortunate in that I have a lot of trails and sidewalks to ride in my town. If and when they finish connecting the trails, I'll be able to ride all the way into downtown Cleveland which is about 70 miles.Comment

To be honest, I'm not the one making fun of it by saying I'm going to go buy a cheap E30, make it one gear, and take out the brakes.I'm not trying to get an attitude, or change anyone's mind. And for the record, I think riding without brakes is fucking stupid.Comment

Whilst fixies might not be my thing, that is one gorgeous frame in the picture below.

What would one pay for one of those cycles in the pictures? Sub-$1k and I'd definitely try it out sometime soon.- Trey
