Del does know fixed preceded freewheels. Right? And all bikes started out this way, so the BMX guys actually owe some respect.

I have to say that I don't see the point in a fixed gear bike either. But I don't generalize and call fixed riders hipsters or trendy or anything. Just because I don't ride one doesn't make it stupid, I just have a different preference. I like to go fast and ride for long distances. And I like to go 50+ down hills which would be stupid on a fixed gear.

And yes, fixed gear bikes ARE less efficient than a geared bike unless you are going the exact same speed all of the time. And it is definitely analogous to a car with one gear; it really is.

Most def, just like freestyle skateboarding. I respect both forms. But as you will notice the masses soon dropped off and the "core" group continued. How many of you are core here? In 5 years will you still be on a fixed? Do you LOVE it that much? If you aren't sure then don't waste your time or money. You have to love it the moment you touch it. I LOVED skateboarding the moment I stepped on my Mini Hawk in the 80s. I loved it even more when I figured out how to actually ollie 6 months later. I loved it with $60k worth of surgeries when I was 26, and I love it every night when I take 2 ibuprofins and rub Arnica all over my knees. If you bust your ass on a fixed, get right back up and bust your ass again on the same thing, then get up and bust your ass again, only to not land what you are trying for a solid two weeks, then you love it.
If not, I will see you engrossed in another trend soon.

Totally. But they don't owe ANY of you guys a single iota of respect.
The shit you guys are doing to these bikes are in no way linked to an "original" fixed gear bike. I respect clay wheeels and rollerskate trucks on a 2x4, but I don't respect the turds who go "longboarding" and call themselves skateboarders. You know, the frat kids with their long college hair, plad shirts, and cargo shorts you see bombing hills at school in their New Balences. They have no clue what it's like to be a skateboarder, yet somehow they can relate with me. Right.
You can relate with a guy who grew up NYC on a single speed hauling ass through traffic to get to school, or a bike messanger...... sure you can. You can relate with Ryan Nyquist as well... you arew all the same b/c you have an itrest with a bike. You aren't, and it doesn't legitimize your being. And it never will.
I am a skateboarder. What are you? A FIXEDER? A biker? What are you?
You're a kid with a bike. Call me in 15 years.

Amen dude. I used to spend all day for weeks trying one trick.

Do you have any idea what happens if you get your pants caught in the drivetrain of a fixed gear while riding? It's not the same as getting stuck in a freewheel.

You get your pants stuck in a fixed gear drivetrain, you are PROPER FUCKED.

And Del, who knows if I'll still be on my bike in 5 years, but I hope so. I am what you were talking about, I LOVED this bike the first time I got on it. And I still do. I feel the same way about fixed gear bikes now as I do about my car.

This is true. I learned the hard way. I also learned not to wear basketball shorts on a fixie.

very true, this applies not only to all bikes, but most notedly fixies, where stopping is near impossible with pants caught in big gear.

Yeah.. its not just for style points.. that chain isn't going to stop when you stop pedaling because you caught your pants

I dont think fixies will die completely, but im sure the fever will cool off a little. But people who genuinely love the bikes will keep riding, they arent just for tricks

I figured out the whole chain thing when my dad taught me how to ride a bike. I wore shorts. BTW when leaning into a turn keep your inside pedal up, that hurts too.

well the 2nd cuff could be "style" if style means not looking ridiculous with 1 cuffed leg, and 1 non

^^ Someone told me they just feel weird having only one rolled up. Probably just has to do with being asymmetrical. Some people don't mind, most do.

I define a cyclist as someone who is into bikes, loves riding, and would rather ride a bike than drive if possible. That's me. I love bikes, I always have.
