I think sometimes honesty can help you, in the case where I was pulled over for going 90mph and answered "no good reason to speed" I clearly admitted my speeding which could have been used against me but at the same time it got me out of the ticket, and reduced to 65mph ticket. So I'm not sure.

In a murder trial or some shit, yeah don't say anything.

No not really, in almost any dealings with law enforcement SHUT THE FUCK UP. While you may have gotten a break on you ticket, it was far more likely he didnt want to have to do all the paper work to arrest you. Its easier for them to just lower the violation to a threshold that you will not go to jail over.

Your rights are the same over a speeding ticket, or a murder investigation.

In all honesty, I was 17 at the time and not really thinking, so I didn't quite realize what I was doing. I think you're right that he didn't want to deal with it, plus as stupid as this sounds it was wide open and late so I wasn't causing a large immediate threat.

I think you can shut up politely though, because I certainly don't want to be an asshole to police (I'm not going to talk!) just because I have the right to. They are people too, gotta use that to your advantage if you can.
