The ironic thing is that if the South hadn't seceded and started the war, which they did when they attacked Fort Sumter, slavery would probably have continued to exist in the states in which it was already legal.
I don't think the south only seceded because of slavery, though. They were upset about lincoln winning presidency (I think, right?) as well as the northern politicians looking out for their way of factory lifestyle and trading instead of the souths lifestyle.

Meh, sooner rather then later it would have come to an end.

I'll give you that. BUT slavery was not why the north went to war. Which I think is where the confusion has been between you and I and some others.

Yeah they went to war because they were attacked! After years of anti-slavery sentiment in government and social life, abolishing slavery in their own states and having a decidedly pro-abolitionist population, you think that slavery had nothing to do with the North's participation in the war? Of course it did. Slavery was like the rallying cry and this is particularly apparent after the Emancipation Proclamation.

See, I disagree. They went to war in order to maintain the union, because they realized it would be better for them.

By the way, the north was hardly "attacked." They set themselves up to be attacked as an excuse to enter a war in order to maintain the union. The goal at the beginning of the war was not to free slaves, the goal was to keep the south and their economy in the union. The emancipation was less about slaves (it only freed them so they could help fight on the unions side, didn't free slaves in the union) and more about gaining support from France.

Which was only made by ABE as pandering gesture to the north for support to defeat the south. Before that much of the north did not give a flying fuck what was going on.

Lincoln not wanting to be THAT GUY you know the one who let the USA fall apart and split up in his watch needed a rallying point to get the support from the north to bring the union back under one flag.

Lincoln was ALWAYS an abolitionist so the Emancipation Proclamation was not just pandering.

The emancipation was a political move. You don't really believe otherwise?

Okay so there were political motivations behind it but that doesn't mean that Lincoln and the North didn't personally agree with it. You guys are essentially saying that because there were political motivations behind abolishing slavery, it was not a "real" reason.

It was convenient. It was used to their advantage.

You're saying they started war to free the slaves.

I'm saying they freed the slaves to end the war.

really Lincoln did not give 2 shits about slavery. It was a political move to garner support from the north. Even the history channel supports this (amazing I know). to think other wise really shows your highschool civics understanding of history again
