There's a difference between welfare and unemployment.. Plenty of single mothers out there working full time at a dead-end job just to pay the bills and keep the kid fed. When you make blanket statements it's easy to lump them in with the total freeloaders who DO need to find a job, but the total freeloaders are in the minority of welfare recipients. Most of them are struggling lower class families who have jobs that simply don't pay enough.

Speaking of unemployment, my GF got her checks cut because they decided that they overpaid her. This is the third time.. missing bills she thought were going to get paid because they cannot get their shit straight. Last time they were trying to get money back.. seriously? How fucked up is that, you'd think with how bad Cleveland got hit this would be routine for them. Sorry I guess this is going OT. I think the point I meant to get to is that the people running these services probably aren't the most diligent.

If illegals are receiving welfare, it's fraud. I don't know how much of this happens, probably enough to piss me off, but properly identifying people should be the highest priority in this sort of program. A little diligence would go a long way here, other than that no major reform necessary. All fraud and attempts should be reported. I'd love to see a crackdown on this.

And shame on employers who hire illegals. OT for this thread.. immigrations should share info with the IRS, anyone with a calculator can find some bullshit on those returns.

what about imposing limits on how much welfare one can actually collect? I'm not clear on welfare laws but, as far as i know, people can continue to collect for quite a long long time. of course this is gross misuse of welfare money (my taxes that I worked for) and is intolerable. If welfare were limited to 3 straight months (arbitrary) then maybe recipients would be more willing to try to change their lives and/or train to get a job.
perhaps there's just not enough incentive for recipients to achieve independence from the system.

This is the welfare act passed by republicans and clinton in 1996...which places much stricter federal limits on welfare. Your state may go above and beyond that level of assistance.
