Ok here we go, if you guys want my advise read on, if not skip this post.

1, Transportation: Lots of factors here, depends on what you are going to be doing with it in the mean time, an what kind of situation you are planing for. Where you live, where you intend to go, or do when SHTF.

If you are building a the ultimate Z day rig for the hell of it, then a SUV/or truck armored up with gun ports and shit is the way to go. But in reality you want RELIABILITY and SIMPLICITY 1st, and fuel economy/availability is your second concern. You dont want something that has a ton of bells and whistles and all kinds of ECM's running everything, Just a Carb, Coil, Dizzy, and thats about it. Something that has been built for ever. You want 4x4 and in good repair with a box of spare parts and maintenance items. Always keep it Full of fuel put larger tank in it, and have a way to store and carry more with and ready to go in the garage as well. This is for just general, you can take this rig camping and off roading and just use it as a extra driver.

Now in Farbins Example with this thread You want OLD SCHOOL Diesel, PURELY MECHANICAL Injected, the only electrics on the thing is the starter and the lights. With a electronics frying EMP from a solar event or nuke, everything would be fried and IN-OP but manual trans Mech injected Diesels. This will also give you great access to more types of fuel, Like heating oil. kero, jet, and even gas with waste oil in it. My advice find a old WWII/korea Multi fuel engine and swap into a old 1/2 ton of some kind. Same rules apply you can play with it drive it yada yada, keep it full, add aux tank and have some jerry cans around full.

This is more about having a hobby to get you out and going camping and what not and having a toy truck to play with but, has a very real and serious alternate use if its ever needed.

Dual sport bikes are a good thing to in warmer climates, and where appropriate and you wont need to leave for long as you cant carry much needed gear.

2: Arms and tools: You dont want LOTS of guns you want a FEW, you want as many as possible to use the same ammo. If you are going to bunker down into your house and just defend you ability to live there, then YES everyone in your group should have 1 of each type and know how to use them and plenty of ammo to feed each. General Rule 1000 rounds for each weapon.

Rifles, are a tool for taking big game, as its unlikely you would need be repeling commies al-la red dawn so really any good rifle in a common caliber .223, .308, 30-06 with decent glass is all thats needed in most cases. If you want to step into a semi-auto then by all means have at it, AR is a great choice thanks to it popularity and wealth of spare parts. Or a BAR for a more traditional approach available in Bigger magnum choices. While the AK is more durable in the fact that you dont have to maintain it in the field ever (I am sure there are AK's in the sand boxes that have never been cleaned in the last 20 years). They are not as Accurate, and ammo is not as easy to find, and with out a commie invasion spare parts are gonna be hard to find.

Shotguns, are going to be the most universal tool you will have, as unless shit is uber serious you will not be engaging people trying to kill and take your shit at 300yds, its more than likely gonna be inside 100 feet, plus great for small game and birds.

Pistol, Never go anywhere with out it, and 3 spare mags end of story.

Tools, well a good knife is a given if not a couple of them. A basic tool bag (this should be in your DD as it is ) so you can fix shit on your ride on the trail. A shovel and ax or camp hatchet maybe a rope saw or small folding saw, hammer some nails and rope, recovery gear. All close at hand in a box or something to be tossed into the Rig to Jump ship.

power, If you are staying home or dont need to leave, a small gen set (5kw is plenty) and some spare fuel (you have this from the transport section right), never hurts to look into small 100w soalr deals for charging batteries. There are small home wind mills or you can build your own as well.. Batteries, have a bunch of Batteries for what ever you have.

If you are going out into the bush, all you are going to need will be a way to keep batteries on radios, phones or flash lights so a hand crank generator or one of those small solar deals.

Food: Ok again if you are staying in have a bunch of caned goods frozen veggies, peanut butter, and dry goods, along with meat in about 3 month supply. As you use it, just replace it. 10gal of clean store bought water for when the power goes out and what not is always something that you should have around anyway. If you have gas you can boil water that you collect or if you can still get it from the city or outta your well.

If leaving take a weeks (or how many days you plan to be gone) of basic food canned goods and what not. Get a Hiking water purifier kit and a few santi tabs and there you go.

Fire, Lighter and matches are good, but keep a magnesium block and knife an you can make fire anywhere as well.

General: TP, Clothing for your season and environment, NO cotton when it gets cold, wool or synthetics that dry fast, and still retain heat when wet, Rain gear, Good foot wear, 1st aid kit, (I have a suture kit and some quick clot in mine as well), good pack to put shit in, couple of water bottles, para cord, fish hooks and line in a small tin, Tarp or tent, sleeping bags (for your climate and season, BUG SPRAY, book or 2 on what you can eat out there, Maps Comps (know how to use them). There is tons more I can keep going on with but thats enough to get everyone on the right track. Cheers

Oh and just go camping some week ends and hiking, to some of the more remote areas near you. Practice some things, lean some shit, and enjoy the out doors. It may be a skill you end up needing at some point.

Also, to add to what Sleeve has said, I gained a wealth of knowledge from www.survivalblog.com

There is a ton of off the wall stuff there, and some is way beyond what any "sheepie city dweller" would want to know, but, even just scanning a few articles a week will increase the logical knowledge base one would need to attempt to survive post-SHTF/TEOTWAWKI.

Alright you've put WAY more thought than is healthy in to this. The world isn't going to end, chill out :)

Seriously. Are you just paranoid? And don't call it 'being prepared', because being overly prepared for something that will never happen is the very definition of paranoia.

It's better to be prepared and never need it than it is to have never prepared and need it.

And serious, he didn't even scratch the surface. Do YOU have extra drive caps or drive couplers in case you need a secondary well? I bet you don't. But do I?

What I'm saying is regardless of IF it's gonna happen, everyone should have a well thought out plan. If some people's plan is to hightail it to ID/MT, then so be it.

But, everyone showing up at my door better have a priceless skill, or a really nice stockpile of goodies to throw into the mix. Each extra mouth to feed per year is gonna take out at least 400 lbs. of stockpile. People need to keep in mind, if the government and dollar based commerce go out the window, How are you gonna be worth 400lbs of food?

LOL dude, most of that is just all common sense stuff, to have around when a Big thunder storm or ice storm, flood out, or similar minor disturbance from mother nature wipes your shit out for a few days to a week.

Like farbin said, I have barley touched the tip of the ice berg on this. I grew up in the woods, as a kid I spent more time out there than in my own bed. Its just a skill set I have and I am glad I have it, as I enjoy spending time in the back country on more than just a couple of hour hikes.

Will I ever need to go full blown survival the road style, NO, but guess what happens if SHTF, I will be Safe, warm, fat, and happy. Where will you be????
