Just a national sales tax (that at current funding levels, although this should really be combined with spending cuts, would be approx 22%). Then you are only taxed on consumption vs your income. Hits the underground cash economy (these people do BUY things), etc.

Define "fair". I agree that payroll and "death" taxes are a joke, but I don't have a problem with capital gains. If anything they should be higher. If a national sales tax could generate enough revenue for the govt without fucking too many people over I'd support it whole heartedly. That would be a huge step in sorting out the clusterfuck that is our tax code. Of course, like you note, that will never happen.

The Democrats are going to get their asses handed to them because they think like Kansas. And the Republicans better figure it out fast.

Taxing goods has a side effect : it promotes undeground economy. People will pay cash to avoid paying taxes. That's more ghost money that the governement has no control on, and less revenues.

Everyone pays the same amount. And you are only taxed when you consume items. I'm not sure how much succinct or simple "fair" is. Fair means "treated with no bias," so if everyone pays the same tax on the same items.

We already tax goods with all manner of taxes. Nearly 80% of the cost of a pack of cigarettes is TAX. But there is a huge "black market" for cigarettes isn't there? Or do the majority of people still buy them from a legit retailer with the tax stamp on the bottom.

When I said underground economy, I meant people that don't pay traditional payroll/FICA taxes on their paychecks. Because prostitutes, drug dealers, contractors who get paid in cash, etc aren't paying any of those "income" taxes.
