I love this quote in there.

Censorship of Huck Finn?!? Censorship and sugarcoating of history and literature does a disservice to students and will only serve to produce ignorant, naive people with an inaccurate sense of, well, history and literature. The censored version should be banned not for its language but rather for irresponsible editorial alterations and for its lack of balls to tell the story like it is.

It's not banned, but they need to play a censored version from now on. Not really surprised to be honest, I'm more surprised it took this long actually.

That's actually a lot easier to explain away. When virtually every track on some records is about mo' money, mo' bitches, mo' guns and "the man", pointing it out for what it is puts it in perspective.

And it isn't really censorship in Canada, is it? No one is preventing anyone from owning an unexpurgated version of that song.

But when Walmart says they won't carry a certain record or book because of its content, given their huge scope, it is defacto censorship. That record isn't going to sell nearly as many copies unless the artist accedes to the will of Walmart.

It's not censorship, it's political correctness. Canada is a vast nation and is proud of their "accepting" image and this is just a move to protect that image. Personally I don't see how this harms anyone, the song will just be altered and played as usual like countless other songs with colorful lyrics.

BTW If you look at cartoons, even some reprints have been redrawn to remove cigarettes from the heroes mouth. It's called adapting.

Lucky Luke gave up on cigarette a long time ago.

"Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?... Has it ever occurred to your, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?... The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking—not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."

You're right, this was the idea of The Party and Newspeak, and completely against the will of the people who, you know, are the ones who complained in the first place. Wouldn't want that government listening to the wants of the people or anything.
