Based on the popular vote, he only garnered just under a third of the population's support (32.18%), but won the presidency when no one could secure enough votes in the electoral college and the vote fell to the House of Representatives. In what became known as the "Corrupt Bargain" by Andrew Jackson, who finished runner-up in the four way race, John Quincy Adams was selected when Henry Clay threw his support to Adams, giving him the votes in the House to win.

See that's one of those thoughts that I wish people could disabuse themselves of. The electoral system is certainly a flawed system if you believe that the popular vote should win the day. However, the electoral system is the law. There have been other presidents that have won the presidency without winning the popular vote (John Quincy Adams, Rutherford Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, George W. Bush). Obviously, most of us were alive when GWB became president and there certainly was some unhappiness at the Supreme Court decision over the Florida recount, but in the end, people accepted the rule of law and he was the President.

You can't just tear the system down that's been in place for over 200 years because you don't like the result this time around. This is what makes some of the liberals who cry not my president seem callow, you don't get to pick and choose when to respect the law.

You are right.

We can have the open debate about the electoral college and we can do something about it through the systems we have in place to make those changes, but for now, its the law.

Its pretty clear that the reason why the electoral college exists is to prevent what happens in Cook County, IL from happening on the national level. Chicago runs the whole state of Illinois and that not reasonable.
