it's not at all absurd. bannon and spicer are appointed officials attempting to control what the media is allowed to say. it's only your own bias that is preventing you from seeing that.

Although I do understand the parallel that you are trying to draw, you do realize that the nazi propaganda machine was much more influential and held a much tighter grip over the dissemination of information in Germany. In addition, Nazi propaganda worked together with the policies of brutality perpetrated by the police and the SS to keep the masses in line. I don't usually agree with Marshallnoise, but in this case I think he's right in finding these types of articles to be a bit ludicrous. The Trump administration may be attempting to steer the media toward their message or keep the media quiet, however, that's a far cry from what the Nazis were doing prior to WWII. Despite my disagreements with Trump and his administration, I see no reason to call them the "Fourth Reich", we are a ways away from that.

My grandmother (born in 20s, lived through WW2, immigrated here in 60s on offer she couldn't refuse by the US Government) would argue that she's seen the the rise in similarities for a long time. One she always mentioned is all the signs that say See Something, Say Something. Apparently they hit pretty close to home on all the Nazi propaganda to always spy on your neighbor. It ruins the sense of community, makes the community weaker, and the state stronger in comparison. I get the rationale behind it. A lot of crimes get witnessed and not reported. See Kitty Genovese. But the oppressive state of the billboards, posters, and signs constantly reminding us to report crimes to overseers is a bit 1984ish.

The State is a lot more subtle about it nowadays. Nazis were very heavy handed. Controlling the media and spying on everyone by phone and internet is a lot easier.
