GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- A federal appeals court has reaffirmed that muddy water running off logging roads after rainstorms is pollution that requires a special permit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The Oregon Department of Forestry and some timber companies had asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider its ruling from August, and on Tuesday the court said it would let the original ruling stand.
Chris Winter of the Crag Law Center in Portland says logging roads are one of the leading sources of pollution harming salmon and steelhead across the West, and he hopes this ruling will lead to improvements on state, federal and private timberlands.
Rod Nichols of the Oregon Department of Forestry says the agency will have no comment until it fully reviews the decision.

Tie this to the fact that every time we exhale, we are polluting too. We are in for a bumpy, regulation filled ride.

pollution is a bit of a vague term, that people tend to give a specific meaning.

        Dude.

Been there, since at least 2005 they have had a hard on for cow farts. It's gonna push the dairy industry out of business.

The Oregon contractors license test is 60% environmental BS and 40% how not to get sued.
Most of the environmental stuff is just fucking stupid. As is in this case.

Salmon require gravel beds in the rivers to reproduce. Trees roots hold the dirt together and without them rain clogs the rivers with mud. The logging technique to prevent this from happening is to leave the trees along rivers untouched. Most loggers are avid outdoorsmen. A long time ago I had a logger friend who together with other loggers petitioned the WA state govt because they required the logging company to cut down those riverside trees.

holy shit. do you really think mud is not pollution? look at it this, anything that we do to the earth is pollution. running around catless, pollution. running around at all, pollution. a crap ton of cows, pollution. a crap ton of intertubes, pollution. we live with some, we try and regulate others.

you're the one that is self proclaimed loving the outdoors, wilderness, and get back to earthiness of your out in the boondocks living and you really dont think excess mud can completely mess up a stream's ecosystem? shouldnt you be experiencing that stuff first hand when you walk into your backyard?

I don't claim to know much about the outdoors, having grown up in the city and all.

But if post #6 is correct, and the muddy water is fucking up how they reproduce, how do you say it ISN'T pollution?

Is it still pollution when it's nature making a river/stream "dirty"?

It's not nearly as obvious as you're making it out to be. Is it natural for all of the trees in an area to be clear cut? Are dirt roads a naturally occurring phenomena?

Humans are in there mucking around with things, it is not unreasonable at all that somebody sits back and looks at something OTHER than dollar signs and profits and realizes "holy crap this whole nature thing is rather delicate and actually runs itself, everything happens for a reason! Maybe we should stop fucking around with it like a bunch of careless buffoons because we really have no idea what we're doing after all."

But no you're right, our actions totally have zero consequences and nature is really dumb. We'll just change whatever we want because we're humans and we run this shit hurrrrr durrrrr.

You completely missed the point. There's a huge difference between the naturally occurring Great Salt Lake and a bunch of people pouring tons of salt around a freshwater lake and watching it wash in.
