Should getting a driver's licence be tied to completing HS?

I just saw this on Autoblog, interesting idea. I'm not sure on this one myself, I'd have to do more research and ponder it a bit. What do you guys think? Should HS dropouts be prevented from getting their driver's licences?

"States including Georgia, Massachusetts, Texas, New York and Michigan, are in favor of these anti-drop measures. The idea behind the proposed laws is that kids would be more likely to stay in school if the privilege of driving an automobile were at stake. Other states, like California, Illinois, Florida and Ohio don't see things the same way."

HA!! They have Mclovin on there!

In all seriousness, who is it that is in charge of maintaining the roads? The gvmt. They already have say on who/what can go on the roads anyways. Why not this? Sure, I'm not for the gvmt getting in everyones shit, but honestly, we could use without some of the people on the road that are, dropouts and graduates.

I just think it should be harder to get a licence.

I'm on the fence about this one. All the dropouts I know from my area are dickbags and I hate them. Not because they're dropouts, but because they suck as people. *Not saying all dropouts are this way, so don't get your dick twisted up.*

^ I agree. If someone is too lazy/dumb/etc to even pass basic HS, are they the kind of person I want piloting a 5000lb death missile? Not really. But at the same time taking away their ability to drive means it's much harder for them to get a job and become a success. Always trade-offs.

I think a better solution would be to offer incentives for people to graduate. Oregon has a 'graduated licence' program, meaning that for the first 6mo you are not allowed to have any passengers under 21 (accident rates go up hugely when passengers are involved). And, IIRC, it takes 12 months before you're allowed to drive without restrictions. Maybe make the probation period longer for those who drop out? No passengers until you're 18? Something like that.

Or even better, just make the driving tests worth a damn and make kids wait until they're 18 to get a licence.

No, I would just like to see actual driver training for young people.

The biggest thing everyone is worried about is parallel parking. When we should be teaching how the car feels at the limit, accident avoidance, emergency driving in wet/less than ideal conditions, etc.

This drive around the block at 25mph and parallel park in an empty parking lot is a fucking joke.

But you have to change the culture here, people don't take driving a car as the responsibility that it is. Like D said, you are in control of two ton vehicle with the potential to cause injury, property damage and death.

NO it should not be tied to your HS diploma

How else do you expect those that may drop out (most do it because they are working and think the work is more important, I was nearly one of these guys) to make a living for them selves ????

Some High School dropouts aren't dropouts because they are necessarily dumb, it's because they haven't found what they like yet. Hence, trade schools. I know plenty of dropouts that have made serious bank..legally of course...they just needed to find what they liked doing.

That being said, it should undoubtedly be harder to obtain a license.

I've seen some rich ass professional people that never finished high school. I think that could group people wrongly. I also think there should be better training and I think police officers need to stop letting people get away with shit like when the whole freeway is going 20 over and the cop is just doing it too. That's BS.

Yeah great idea. Let's take more rights away from people so they "do the right thing". It's fucking ridiculous as usual.
Leave people alone to make their own choices.

One of the few things I agree with you about.
Mandatory theory and practical tests...you don't pass you don't get a license. Insurance would drop out the bottom and the number of accidents would be much lower.

I do however believe driving is a privilege, not a right. Finishing High School is a choice left to the parents and the child.

fuck that! survival of the fittest my friend. if they cant make it out of high school, they are a drag on society and we better cut our losses where they are.

                        excellent idea.

I'd be happy enough if they could restrict it to people LEGALLY in this country.

That is a pretty harsh generalization, I never finished high school and I cant see how I am any more of a drain on society than anyone who did.

Added to that, I have never had a serious accident and don't believe that I would be any better driver if I had finished high school.

Idiots are idiots regardless of education. I still think that it should be much harder to get a license as has been mentioned above.

how the fuck does having a diploma equate to your ability to operate a car in a safe or efficient manner???

I know off the top of my head 4 guys that never finished high school and each earn more money than you, me and Darrin combined by a very large margin every year. All of which require them them own and operate a truck for their job.

yeah we are taking care of those degenerates arent we????? You would be willing to keep people like that from earning a living by taking or denying them the ability to drive based on high school. High school has nothing to do with driving, this is just more govt bs to try and influence peoples lives to do what they want you too..
