Last week, Oregon’s state House passed a bill that would require students to apply for post-secondary education, the military, or an apprenticeship or to attend an informational session on a training program in order to receive their high school diploma. Bill supporters argue that this could increase the number of kids who enroll in higher education.

Yet, there is no evidence that such a program will increase enrollment in higher education. Already, 70% of U.S. students enroll in college within two years of high school graduation. But around 30% of students drop out, and many more fail to graduate on time according to the NCES, a division of the U.S. Department of Education. One major cause is that students are commonly unprepared for college-level work.

Around 40 percent of Oregon’s community college freshman enroll in remedial courses. And surveys by the NCES have found that about 1 in 4 freshmen in 4-year public universities enroll in remedial courses. Students who take remedial courses are far more likely to drop out of college. Yet startlingly, in a 2008 survey only 14% of such students thought their high school coursework had been difficult.

Rather than heap more top-heavy mandates on schools and students, the legislature would be wise to free schools to do what they are supposed to do: educate kids. And rather than manipulate children to apply for post-secondary education or the military, the legislature should empower kids to seek out and choose a high school education that will challenge them and prepare them for life.

So much for finishing High School and going to work...

This countries politicians do not understand the education system, shocking they would do something like this. Too bad most people don't value vocational/career and technical education.

Agreed. It's also too bad companies are moving technical jobs overseas.

I would too if i had a lazy work force that thinks they are entitled to benefits and wages that rival those who earned and deserve it.

Yes, it's all the work force's fault.

It's not because overseas labor is fucking CHEAP.

Most of our clients outsource their manufacturing to japan. That country, more so than the US. is known for having the highest wages in the world and trust me that even though on average our clients would pay 5% less if they were to employ domestically/locally (and yes they tried too) their production levels and quality would be shit

Not sure what industry you're in, but the vast majority of outsourcing by U.S. companies is definitely not to Japan. Most U.S. companies don't outsource jobs because they give a fuck about quality either.

The reason their production levels and quality would be shit in comparison to Japan is that our system doesn't school kids in technical fields like it should. Plus smart kids aren't as interested to enter technical fields in our country because the pay and respect earned for them is much lower than other often less productive options.

Whats ur definition of technical? Engineering? Life science? My firm hemorages money and resources to those fields especially in terms of charity to educational institutions yet in all our efforts, the student participation rates continue to decline because nancy and jack would prefer to be a paralegal or a lawyer than to spend 5 mins learning about fluid dynamics and heat transfer because they are supposed to earn more money than the technical guys without breaking a sweat. All while the dumb school dropout (the worst of the bunch with no o skills of value let alone the means to contribute to society) thinks he or she is entitled to the wages of the mentioned. Hell at least my company gets a good tax break in all its futile efforts to save the NINJA generation
