Are these guys doctors? No, one is an out-of-work contractor and the other was just arrested and has large legal bills looming.

I can't :( My wireless router doesn't support the extra bandwidth sadly. (or something along those lines)

No but this is after the fact. They filed after they found out, those are the facts. Have you ever had to save anyone before? Usually no thinking at the time is involved its all reaction. Of course if I have a gun to my head I'm obviously about to shoot myself, but you made the choice to react. I didn't ask for it! and in the process of saving my life you were shot. Are you going to be expecting to pay your own bills?

Keep in mind these guys are only trying to get some compensation. $25,000 gets you almost nowhere as far as medical bills. This will get eatin up with tests alone if he has lung damage and no insurance.

Such a messed up situation in general. I'd like to think I would NOT sue them, seeing as how I chose to help that person and subsequently injured myself.

HOWEVER, I can see how they might be a little less than enthused; they risked their lives and sustained injuries trying to save a failed suicide attempt.

Alter the situation: If the woman had 2 kids in the back and made a mistake, and the guys rescued them all and the family was thankful, etc.. Do you think they would/could still sue the woman for medical bills etc...?

It's not about what makes or doesn't make sense but more about what Nando said; precedence. Which leads to what I've been saying :)

I'm not talking about the rescuers. I'm talking about the person who needs rescued because they made a poor choice, and they made that choice conciously. you can only assume that *most* people would attempt to rescue somebody in need. therefore, the person who put themselves in danger knew that somebody else was going to risk injury/death because of their concious decision.

if you're hiking and you trip and break your leg and you have to be rescued, that's one thing. But if you're being stupid and purposely jump off a cliff, break your leg, and somebody else has to risk their life to save your ass, you're going to have to pay.

They still do that shit in the laundry room in Ohio? We typically hear of a camper blowing sky high in the national forest about once a month. People were burning their houses down, but then the rednecks got smart. I could take you out right now to an area where three houses burned within two months in a less than one mile radius of each other.

did she though? not many suicide attempts are successful. Most of the time it's a cry for help or attention, rather than they actually *want* to die.

actually, being a suicide attempt just makes it more obvious she was being wreckless and acting without care for those around her.

                            Not saying that at all.

But if I chose to help someone and put myself in a situation where I could potentially get seriously injured or even killed, I wouldn't then sue the person for compensation.

should they be held responsible for trespassing? I'm assuming that's what they did when they hopped the barbed-wire fence.

I just don't think they should sue her. A few years ago my dad and I were in a large crowd and a lady passed out. We carried her out of the crowd, because people were stepping on her. It was really wet and muddy, my dad slipped and messed up his ankle requiring him to go to the doctor on multiple occasions and having to have some physical therapy. He probably paid out of pocket close to $5k. He never even thought about suing the lady and I don't think he should be able to, we chose to help her.
Maybe that is irrelevant scenario, but that is just my feeling.

So...next time I happen upon an accident and hear someone yelling for help I'll chalk it up to a suicide attempt and roll on to my dinner date.

Could she not think of a better way to off herself? Seriously. Take the biggest, pretty much most indestructible vehicle on the road and wreck it. Someone needs to get some internet...or common sense...
