No, I'd be happier if people were required to provide for themselves. This is not a compromise between government and free market, it is a blatant maneuver to instill further Governmental control of a citizens daily life. In 50 years, people will be bitching about their low level of governmental medical care, just as senior citizens are bitching about the struggle of living on a meager Social Security check/stipend today. Bottom line, you should prepare throughout life for the potentialities, as opposed to expecting Uncle Sam to provide for you, and living all willy-nilly without thought of the future because there is a safety net that someone decided to build under you on the backs of others labors.

It already is though. All of human society is partially on the backs of others. I understand your argument, and I actually agree with you. In order for society to exist though, there is always going to be some acceptable shared risk within that society. It is a fundamental part of society. I have recognized this, and reconciled it with my beliefs, and I believe that access to affordable medical treatment falls under the category of acceptable shared risk.Comment

h0lmes, you've still got a long way to go, you are walking down the right path, but you still don't REALLY get it. I commend you for coming this far, but you are only a quarterway around the block.Comment

The acceptable shared risk should be limited to financing the protection of our boarders, and protection of a common form of financial transfer between parties. Health care is a benifit of the fruits of ones labor, not a basic human right like the protection of not being locked in a cell, or placed under undue financial burden at birth without choice.Comment

well, except for the Stamp Act of 1765 which taxed every official document beyond the fee for service.
those that think today's decision validates the Prez should realize Chief Justice Roberts has merely focused on the duplicity of Obama, who promised not to raise taxes on the poor.
Calling the mandate a tax is shrewd political rhetoric- but only if the repubs are smart enough to use it.Comment

the democrats have accomplished all they wanted and more. where does this ruling get out the vote for the dems, as opposed to conservatives who hate the mandate?
romney pledged to give every state and exemption on day one if elected, then work to get rid of it.

poverty today is about where it was under LBJ, yet we spend about 40% more on things like food stamps. the fucking government advertises for people to sign up and get on the food stamp program.
