What was your effective tax rate for 2011

Got my taxes back from the accountant today. My effective tax rate was 20.2%, which is less than Obama's, more than Romney's for the year. Just curious where everyone else is at.

Explain to a Canadian, but I'm assuming that means you paid 20.2% income tax? If that's the case I was at about 34%

You beat Obama by .3% and I have yet seen Romney's tax return. Im sure that would all change next year as the new Capital Gains tax takes into effect.

Mine was 17%, no state income tax.

But the formula I would use to get the same figure from my numbers is-

(Federal Income Tax + Local & State Income Tax if applicable) / Adjusted Gross Income.

Alright, put me down for 24%. I just used the free fillable forms method myself for both federal and local. Of course this doesn't include money spent to SSI, FICA, medicare etc. or local sales taxes, license and registration renewals, property tax, etc. Freakin A, thats a lot of moneys gone from mah pocket.

I was 10.5, but I use a retired IRS agent to file my taxes so he pushes the envelope.

No idea. I do my own and don't calculate it out. I'm toward the bottom of the 25% Fed Income bracket + 6% or so state income tax.

Yes, effective is total income tax after deductions. We also have to pay towards social security and medicare which isn't included. Is Canadian universal healthcare included in your income tax or do you pay separate for that? Does anyone have the comparison to other first world countries on what Americans spend on combined insurance, SS, and all taxes as a percentage of income?

                            That's a quantity, not a rate.

Just to end this thread quickly, even if Obama got his wish to tax the rich at whatever rate he wanted. It still wouldn't cover anywhere near what he spends. It's fucking pointless to bring this up.
