I was gassing up at a station in rural PA about 10 yrs ago and some random trucker angrily yells out to me after apparently seeing my plate "your from massatwoshits huh" ? Caught me a bit by surprise and I said nothing back. I guess assholes are everywhere no matter what state. Of course he could have been a liberal and where he was "from" I have no idea.

It's really interesting because OK was a notoriously BLUE state up until the mid-60s.
The parties used to be opposite of where they are now on the political spectrum. Lincoln, as a Republican, was pretty fucking progressive back in the day, as was Teddy Roosevelt. The shift started somewhat with Wilson and really moved into full gear with FDR, but quite a few conservative holdouts in the Democratic party remained through the 60s and 70s. Hell, this guy was still a Democrat in '04.

T.R. was not a dem. He was bull moose ........ and what you are refering to as the "shif" is the Progresive movement. That really started with TR. Not to mention that the obly real reason abe "freeed" the salves was to gather the support of the industrlized north for funding the civial war.

wait... didnt the war start when abe lincoln (campaigning against slavery) took office? the whole reason they rebelled was his position on slavery, thus starting the civil war. as soon as the succession started, im sure he had all the funding he needed.

Not so much anti slavery, as anti slavery EXPANSION in to the new territories.

Civil war was about states rights, not slavery

TR was originally a Republican, but he tried running for president after leaving office and Taft had already served a term. Taft was the Republican nominee, so TR invented the Bull Moose party and ran as a third party.

The point of the Emancipation Proclamation was indeed to hurt the economy of the South, without upsetting the Union states that still had slavery. While Lincoln didn't take a strong stance against slavery while in office he was still a well known abolitionist and had made his possition on the issue very clear. His priority as president, however, was to preserve the union, and he rightly saw the abolition of slavery as contrary to that desire.
