There is nothing wrong with discussing this topic again. After all, it is the Politics and Religion sub forum.
I like the cosmological argument for the existence of god. Basically, something had to have set the universe in motion, and whatever that mechanism is can be called god.
My problem lies with religion. Religion teaches people to not think for themselves and follow blindly. Religion teaches people that the material world doesn't matter, only some immaterial realm with which we don't have any evidence for is what matters. Religion teaches people to pray, and thus only make themselves feel better, instead of offer some sort of actual assistance. Religion teaches people to not take control and responsibility of their lives, let god take care of it. Religion teaches people that you shouldn't give yourself or others credit for good things that happen, god must have done them. Believe it or not, the message that religious folk hold so highly and preach from their soap boxes, is actually a bad one.Comment

I had my mind changed through discussing this a number of years ago. Even if minds aren't changed, I still enjoy having the discussion. That is what this section is for, after all.
I never said it hasn't been covered, just that there wasn't a thread dedicated specifically to the question. I searched a few different way, I'm pretty good at internetting ;). There's a few threads that beg the question, but like I said, none of the address the question head on.Seriously, search. This topic has indeed been covered here in P&R, and went as well as I describe.
You're making an appeal to ignorance here. I cannot disprove god, therefor there is a god. And he has all these specific characteristics that were written about a couple thousand years ago. There is no proof that there is, and there is no proof that there is not. At the end of the day its what you believe. I believe there is a incomprehensible force that "created" all life in the universe, but to call it a "god" is only something we as humans name it in order to comprehend it.
How old do you think the universe to be and am I correct in assuming you to be a Christian?Comment

Herp de durp, I'm a Christian, la di da, ahuck, ahuck them thar universes are 4,000 years old, duh.Comment

Why? You seem to be referencing the time before the big bang, but before the big bang there was no time. Remember, the theory of relativity shows us that time and space are connection. Before the big bang there simply wasn't space and, in keeping with relativity, there was no time either.Comment

The time before the big bang could have existed on another plane, or a dimension we and our science cannot perceive.Comment

Im not religious, i dont follow any specific belief. And from what scientists say its around 13 billion years old but im no scientist. I never said that a "god" created us, i said a force. I think you slightly misunderstood my statement, or it could be im not the best getting my point across...either way something started the world and universe we live in today. What you or I call it is just a matter of perspective.sigpic

I saw MIB3 this afternoon, I'm just refrencing one of any potentially possible concepts. I haven't been given the answers, just ideas.Comment

So you are saying that there was a beginning? It doesn't matter if there was no space and time before the existence of the universe, this doesn't show that there cannot be a mechanism. In fact, if it is true that there was nothing before, and now there is something, then you are actually arguing in favor of a mechanism. Why? You seem to be referencing the time before the big bang, but before the big bang there was no time. Remember, the theory of relativity shows us that time and space are connection. Before the big bang there simply wasn't space and, in keeping with relativity, there was no time either.
Also, there is fairly new science which theorizes that new universes are made inside of black holes.
Also, the universe could have itself been the mechanism and could have set itself into motion. You know how they say god is everywhere? God = the universe.Comment

Ah, gotcha. "God" and "force" are pretty interchangeable in this context when you're speaking nondenominationally. Why is it that you believe in this undefined force?Im not religious, i dont follow any specific belief. And from what scientists say its around 13 billion years old but im no scientist.
