It's more about the fact that there is not one definition of marriage, but maybe examples of marriage in the Bible - and some are not so pleasant.

Hagar and Ishmael - Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; so she said to Abram, “The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me.”

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Vengeance on the Midianites - The LORD said to Moses, “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.” So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the LORD’s vengeance on them. Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.” So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.

17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

But again, we're off course because we're talking about some people's religion being used as a basis of an argument for defining marriages in a country that has a "separation of church and state".

I know, this doesn't necessarily have to do with the thread haha. My point is simply that those are in the bible, just as every sin is. It isn't necessarily the "biblical definition" of marriage. But I digress.

Actually, God is telling the slave of the barren wife to have the husband's children... it is not a sin or looked down upon, but rather encouraged.

7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

Personally, I'm for polygyny. Why shouldn't the government recognize this kind of marriage? Why discriminate against 3 or more consenting adults who want to form a union? How would that "break my leg or pick my pocket"? Love that quote mar1t1me, thanks.

I can believe that. It does seem applicable to the situation here, thanks for the full quote. I love Jefferson, warts and all.

I was looking for this earlier, thanks to kronus, here is a list of marriage rights as he linked in an earlier post. Which of these rights should not be allowed for same sex couples and why?
