I've been telling people for years! Unions are crippling our economy. They had their place back in the early 1900s through about 1950. we needed the reform as a country. But now we have to look at the big picture and that we live in a global economy, Unions need to be done away with, along with all collective bargaining. People should be paid based on their performance, not seniority or what an over inflated economy is telling them they should be paid.
We lost a 82 year old company and these 18500 idiots now lost their jobs. Lets see how much that tiny raise was worth it to them. - let me guess their pay was better than what they will be making this Christmas.Comment

Anyway, this is a very unfortunate situation and I wish it didn't turn out this way. Best of luck to everyone affected by this happening and hopefully they will find work soon.Comment

Weird my company has been doing very well for the last 150 years and everyone is unionized. Weird..... Let me guess you believe its employees that kill a company and not its management, products, or market conditions.1985 BMW 325e

When you are dealing with a free market system and you cant correct your business it will fail. unions have a strangle hold on so many of our country's work places.
Unions in 2012 are a lose lose. and when you finally realize it will be too late.
make less, keep your job, fire the people that under preform. reality sucks and cooperate bailouts aren't the answer.Comment

don't even get me started on the california nurses union. a lot of medical organizations in my area are in the same position. Even non-profit companies like kaiser and sutter health are close to hostess status. they are the primary contributor of crappier service and sky rocketing insurance costs out here.
my significant other who happens to be a hardworking bright (short of being a doctor) nurse cannot even get a job unless she is a member. On top of that, their pay, hiring, and enrollment system isn't based on performance. It's all about connections.
sickens me that they use "patients health" as a poster child for their ridiculous demandsComment

I have always been in Florida and only dealt with a few union workers and was not impressed. Hired a mason when building houses, showed me his union card as he just moved down from the North East. Well, I figured "Hey, union worker, this guy is going to be great!". Well, when I asked him why he was getting 1/3 the work done of the rest of the guys, he replied "Back home we will catch flack for out-performing the others and the reps get upset when we lay more than 100 blocks in a day." I told him to pucker up and get something done and ended up firing him less than a week later. At the time, the going rate for contractors in Florida was about $3/block give or take, by the time I was done paying his wages, comp and taxes, he was $27/hr ($18/hr pay). So at the end of the day his cost would be $216 to me - not much left for the business expenses at that rate, bit to make matters worse each mason had to have a tender at an avg of $8/hr ($12 after taxes etc = another $96/day). At his rate of production, I would lose $12/day per pair of workers.
No experience working for any unions, only experience with them was this example...Comment

Those idiots your talking about are family members to some of us.
You don't even know what your talking about. My brother has been making a 115 mile round trip to work every day for years, because that company has been dying for many years now.
It was going to happen one day, the name Hostess has been tossed aound so many times over the years. About 15 years ago, when the company started going down hill, my father that was running most of the midwest (Wi,Mi,Il,In) areas bailed and headed over to Holsum bread- he saw it coming back then.Comment
