A majority of Americans, 53%, place more blame for the shutdown on the GOP according to a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released late Thursday, with 31% targeting President Barack Obama as more responsible for the shutdown. And in multiple surveys, favorable views of the Republican Party are at never-before-seen lows. In a Gallup survey, just 28% of Americans had a positive view of the GOP, and in the NBC/WSJ poll that number was 24%.

On the flip side, Obama’s approval numbers have ticked up, with a 51% favorable, 47% unfavorable score in the latest poll from the conservative-leaning Rasmussen Reports.

All told, the polling indicates a potentially catastrophic miscalculation by House Republicans, who in the pursuit of pleasing their conservative base have alienated large swaths of the rest of the country.

well obviously I think there were some groups like that behind getting the government shut down in the first place, but I don't think they got what they expected - i.e. the president decided not to give in to their demands, enough is enough.

it's obvious that what begun as a libertarian movement, akin to OWS, has been completely hijacked by the super rich (Kochs etc) and turned against them. they are part of what they are fighting against and they don't even know it. it's only in their echo chamber that they think they are "winning" or that somehow anyone could "win" from this mess..

The US will NEVER default on anything. The world markets and economy will never allow it. The US is the largest consumer and manufacturer of goods in the world, and the rest of the world cannot allow a collapse. It would unhinge the entire world economy.

This is the reason you see the markets climbing even with the "grandstanding" in the US government over the debt ceiling. The people in the markets know it really means nothing, as they have been through it before. All that will happene is the US will print more money, and devalue thier currency, and use that currency devaluation to pay thier debts back at a lower total cost to the government.

I think you underestimate how crazy people like Cruz and Bachmann really are.

Not while the US is the economic and consumer faction that it is. The US government may attempt to do it, but I don't believe the world banks and governments will allow them to. It would destroy the world economic structure and throw so many other countries into utter collapse.

this isn't a Disney movie, there's no knight in shining armor that's going to save us at the last minute; god's not going to wave his hand and magically make them pass an agreement. a default may still be unlikely but it's entirely possible and there are plenty on the extreme fringe who'd like to see it happen. The problem is, they're really close to having the power to making that a reality.

A majority of the members of the House have gone on record saying that if they were given the opportunity to vote, they would support what's known as a "clean" continuing resolution to fund the government.

So House Republican leaders made sure no such vote could happen.
