I dont know if Obama will risk it. Is the Ukraine really worth a larger conflict with Russia, which could quickly snowball into a much larger conflict? I dont think so.
I think there will be a lot of saber rattling by the US and EU governments, and a few pieces of paper passed around by the UN with which Russia will wipe its ass. But thats about it.
I dont even think the Ukraine can mount any kind of armed resistance. They are completely broke as a country and I bet the money for the military is almost non existent. Not to mention Russia would love them to fight back, because that would give Russia the excuse to take the rest of the Ukrain and not just have to content them selves with the Crimea.
Right now all Russian troops are staying in the Crimea. I have been listening to the German news which is a bit more detailed than most of the American news I get.

We've always been careful not to intervene directly with Russia and I doubt we will start now. I think it will stop at annexing Crimea...but who knows. In Georgia, Russia still has presence left over from 2008 if I am correct.

My guess is ever since the red line in Syria putin has been planning something like this. This is some very scary powder keg shit. Russia has been constantly and actively working with just about every us foe. My guess he doesn't want a conflict but rather see what he can get away with.
