From my experience, the people who are quickest to demand respect is given to those who serve/serve/sacraficed are those who have not done so themselves. This notion that anything other than complete adherence to "respect" of national symbols like flags and anthems is absurd, it can carry a lot of weight when people refuse to do so and they have a valid cause.
