For autox I run ST class on my Hankook Ventus RS-2s and I love them. Check out treadzone.com for good prices on tires.

Interesting reading some of the responses on here. we run the 710's on our Rabbit SPU car and have had good success with them. The brand new set we got probably 3 years ago now has 4-5 race weekends and they still have some life left. Maybe it's just a light car?
we have an old take-off set of R6's and were never really impressed with them. debating going to full slicks or picking up another set of 710's. I'm always keeping an eye cause i love hearing feedback on the ra-1 vs r888's tooRalleytuned.com Demonrally.com Traksclothing.com Spitfireefi.com

old hoosiers are going to be hard. Not surprised you weren't impressed.
Hoosiers are not for budget racing, that's for sure. You pretty much always have to have new ones to be seriously competitive. I always had last years clearance model, which were still pretty fast - especially when they were new. But after 50-60 runs, they start to get hard from heat cycles and grip falls off.
If they're already used and been sitting around for a year or so, they are hard and not worth anything but for maybe practice runs. Don't judge them based on that, judge a new set that cost you $900 :p
I like my R888s a lot better though, if only because they have 95% as much grip, but I never have to take them off and I can use them for pretty much anything. they also last way longer.

For autocrossing I use Kumho V710's. Great traction for a 3 to 4 runs before they get too hot.
On the E30 club race car we have used Toyo RA1's which are good and Nitto NT01's which I think are better than the Toyo's. These are good HPDE tires. We are moving to slicks on the race car but up to now the Toyo's and Nitto's have been very cost effective (many cycles, multiple race weekends).
