anything wrong with pinning on bumper cover skins?

    Hey guys,

Is there anything wrong with pinning on bumper cover skins? I took the bumper support out and used some hood pins and pinned it to the bumper cover. The pins only stick about 2cm out.

depends on the class. id read up on the rules...

theres a lot of weight to be saved with that. i was going to do the same thing [as well as strip any sound insulation, etc] on my car when it gets turned into a track rat.

Depends who you run with. Check the rule book for the organization, and ask the officials and/or tech inspectors.

What are you using on the sides? We're using Dzus fasteners.

possibly the best method ever to check for strength :)

Can you take a pic for us of what your setup looks like with the bumper off, how the pin is held together?

What do you think the weight savings was? I've been planning this for my track rat for a while now

Ahh, ok. With our fibreglass bumper covers there is no provision to mount using the stock sliders.

the weight savings is pretty hefty ... since the fiberglass support was taken out and the metal brackets.... i didnt weigh it but i would say its about 40lbs front and back... all i did to mount the pin is weld on a nut to the metal support that goes into the frame put the pin in and lock it down with another nut... put grease on the end to mark the spot on the bumper... drill and pin... i zip tied the front lights in for home to street transportation.

Get rid of the bumper shocks while you're at it. They serve no purpose without the bumper cores and they weigh quite a bit. What does your car weigh? I had my 318is down to 2375 with a full interior and a full tank of gas. ;)

I've been thinking about doing something similar to my dd, the plastic bumpers are such a hassle to take off. It wouldn't be very safe though i guess:( BTW that front end looks sooo business! I like it!
