B5s are the lightest of the Audis since 2000, so theoretically they should be the best in most racing situations. There are aftermarket center diffs that change the front/real bias of power, and there is unlimited aftermarket suspension mods...With the right amount of money, you can build a B5 S4 that will kill many cars on any track...but that's far from the majority of the cases out there.

As others have said, watch out if he's upgraded the car to K04s or bigger (TIALs are the big thing now) because 400+whp is made with ease.

That said, if he's running a tiptronic, he's screwed. Even if he has chipped the car you'll smoke him with a decent E30.

How does the B6 compare? I had mine for just over 2 years and when my e30 was down I autocrossed the a4 with the stock s-line suspension trim with tiptronic / quattor and was faster than the guy in a lighter a3 with dsg etc... the b6 felt sporty (for it's size/class of the car) and even though it was not the higher s/rs line you could make it oversteer as I've learned a few times. Another driver drove the car and commented on how well it was hiding it's weight/size as well.

But I deff. agree with you on it still not being the best choice for tight courses.

770s are definitely the big thing. I wouldn't say there is a "new" K04. They're still what most people do... RSK04s are still probably 75% or more of all upgraded B5 S4s.

But for those looking for 500+ whp, the Tials are where it's at. But that's baller type money for most.

Back on topic though, what the poster above said about the tippy is accurate. tips are trash, you better hope you beat him, or you have some 'splainin to do, Mr. Forza 2. :P

A3 w/ DSG is a fwd car and also not very light. It's not a big surprise you beat him, but probably a testament to your driving too!

But, IMO, B6s are terrible track cars...Like awful! But then again Audi definitely did NOT design the B6 to appeal to the enthusiast market. It was squarely aimed to appeal to the masses as a reasonable alternative to the Lexus and Acura marks...BMW too, but the E46 cars were head and shoulders above the B6 Audi in handling. Only Quattro made it in any way superior.

DSG would deff, accelerate way faster than the tiptronic.... I didn't think a3 was on the same weight level as the quattro a4 though? Hmmm. Maybe it was also due to it being awd vs fwd and the s-line suspension etc.

Anyway, they deff make nice daily cars when stupid shit doesn't break... (self adjusting headlights, high pressure pump or whatever it was, tiptronic controls).

It's like a nice 5 series, good for longer drives, comfortable, and best with the little brother/sister 3 series for the autox/track duties lol

Maybe it was due to your fuh raze autoxing skillz Jean. :p You know better than to think that the car matters too much.

Kish, would you choose the RS4 as a track car?

not as a track car no. too heavy, and more importantly consumables cost too much, when you do 30+ days a year, that adds up :) I wouldn't mind driving it on track a couple times a year though.

I had an RS6'd S4 (465+awhp) for about a year, the cars power was relentless but the handling just wasn't there. It had eibach sport springs and sport struts, the car felt slow and off balance through the turns, and steering feedback was meh.

I never really was comfortable pushing it through the twisties, it just didn't feel like it was connected to the road well. I know it had traction but the weight transfer was crappy.

I would take my ZHP and E30 over the S4's handling any day. So OP if you are somewhat competant behind the wheel you will poo on the S4 while autoXing.

Audis just aren't good AutoX cars.

Go look at the SCCA Solo Nationals Championship results from the past 2 years and see how man Audis even dared to compete.

I have turned in times at auto-x in a b5 s4 with k04's and coilovers and my s50 e30 on coils and the is no comparison. The Audi is a zeppelin. That bein said I have seen some very fast Audi's. There is a guy here in Reno who auto-x's a crazy c4 s4 with a giant turbo that weighs 2800lbs that thing is scary.
