could you mount a piece of plywood or ABS or something beneath to make the bottom flat? That was always something I thought of for the e30. Maybe split it based on where the exhaust falls? Would that render the flattening of the underside completely useless? Or just make it a little less effective?

It could help drag, certainly. You really don't get into making downforce with just a flat bottom, though. You would definitely need to keep the exhaust open, and you'll also potentially run into problems with trans and diff temps. I don't think I'd want something flammable like plywood or plastic either.

very good point - it'd prob have to be carbon? which would jack the price way up for not that much pay off.

A lot of people use aluminum sheet or alumalite.

you could make a fiberglass bellypan for pretty cheap but most people use aluminum for its strength properties. Composites tend to shatter where as aluminum will absorb most of the energy of something that would otherwise destroy your oilpan. If it's strictly a track car I would go with a composite under tray to reduce drag, I don't see it being worth trying to make an entire under tray to try to get downforce, it would be outrageously expensive IMO.

It looks like most of these are just bolted to the bottom of a lip valence and subframe or skid plate in the rear? No adjustability? If I were to do a splitter on an e30, I would build it from alumalite and bolt it to a small 1" square tube frame that bolted to the frame rails with slots to allow some adjustment... I am definitely nowhere near the point of wanting or needing aero, and I think a lot of people go there before properly setting up their car or learning how to drive it.
