lo oil press issues not a myth for us!!!!

I had heard varying opinions on our cars suffering lo op during some specific on track activities..BUT

I have now confirmed via gauges, that I do lose op during a lt hander that lasts like 3-4 seconds....its a tight decreasing radius.......its not clear but my gauge goes to like 10 lbs or so.....my warning lite( that I instlld) does not go on.....its hooked up to stock lite....so thats what 7 lbs?......any how Im a bit unhappy.......but will continue to track and overfill a bit.....and Ill run some laps w/ the cam zoomed in to op gauge for a better view. Also, since my oil pan gasket is walking a bit.....Ill maybe add a crank scraper when I do my gasket.

what PSI does your engine sit at while idling? i would get a pressure switch at or just above that number and plumb it in using a T. the stock 7psi switch on my m3 is just about useless

James...thnx for respone.....she sits @ 15-18 lbs at idle. Im a little slow w/ electrics.... Plumb it in using a T to my warning lite I assume?...

Yeah, the same thing happened to me when I ran out of 20/50 oil last year. I used 2 quarts of 20/50 and 3 quarts of 10/40 the night before a track day and ended up w/ my first oil warnings on a left at PIR.
I have since installed a crankscraper from crankscrapers.com just to make sure I don't have the same issue again. The crankscraper was really well made and fit w/ no grinding required at all. I have also stocked up on 20/50 so that doesn't happen again too.

the crankscrapers are nice. I ended up not using mine though, it was a custom one off made for the ix and still needed a bit of work to fit; I just wanted to get my damn motor put together so I left it out. I'll just save it for another motor down the road..

Did the scraper and 20/50 allow you to have less oil press drop?.......pls tell me the results. At Pocono yesterday she dropped a bit in one lt hander. Its clear that its lt handers only.........!

It's because our engines lean over to the right side. During left turns, oil doesn't drain out of the cylinder head very well and the sump can run dry. Same thing happens to my E46. Try overfilling the sump a little bit, 1/2 quart maybe. Don't get too carried away.

To those that track their cars: Is there a reliable "fix", such as a baffled oil pan or extra drain lines from the head to the sump? Or do you just use an accusump?

A couple of racers I know run a custom baffeled pan, contact a place like Apex performance out in San Diego, it's a nice part, but definetly spendy. I honestly can't say I've heard of too many actual failures with oil starvation on an m20. I usually overfill by a quart anyway when I go out on track.

Swing wild, brake later, don't apologize.

I run an E30 race car on Toyo RA1 tires and my home track in Seattle has a couple of long sweeping left hand turns. We pull over 1g on these turns. I do have gauges for oil temp and pressure and the oil pressure drops very low in the left hand sweepers on every lap. I've been running the same engine for 5 years and it is still running great, so I don't worry about the intermittent drops. I just monitor the dials on the straights for anything out of the ordinary with no lateral G's on the car.

I'm running a stock M20 engine with just an aftermarket chip. Also have Ground Control AD shocks FWIW.

                          cheers,

                            Great info, Lance!

How many times have you had to replace rockers? Also, what RPM do you use as a shift point?
