Actually In a 2007 Mustang GT (auto)Totally stock down to the BFG KDWS i kept up and beat a 98 cobra on RComps and was 3 seconds faster then the other 2006 Manual GT
Honestly I found it easier. Because of the longer 1st gear, I never had to shift out of it. I just stuck it in 1 and let 'er rip. I was also in the meat of the power band (5-6.5K) where as the guys with sticks were lugging around at around 4K in second. Also, if you do ever have to shift from 1-2 and then back 2-1, it's smoother in an auto frankly. It's hard to shift from 2-1 in a stick with these cars. At least it's hard as fuck in mine!
put it in 1st gear, forget about it. nobody who is just starting is going to be fast (unless you were born talented), and you will still learn a lot. having a manual or automatic is going to make zero difference in the beginning!
typically you only shift once in an autox anyway - from 1st to 2nd. the rest is all done in 2nd gear. the auto's 1st gear ratio is about the same as the manual's 2nd. shifting gears usually makes you slower anyway..
yeah, don't listen to the guys who think you need a turbo, coilovers and r-comps to start out with. those are the same people who always say they're going to go to the track one day, but never do. you're better off starting out with a stockish car and working on learning how to drive. :)
