Hire an appraiser. I'd ask your adjuster which appraisal service they commonly use that way you won't have the chance of them disputing their own appraisal company. Usually when you ask them that they will offer to pay for it. Comparables vehicles is just a way to shut ignorant people up. If you show them ten vehicles exactly like yours for $10k they can't just offer you $10k since they don't come up with the initial value. It usually comes from a company like ADP. And don't listen to "words of wisdom" from r3v tards. Each state has different laws and may not apply to you. I was an insurance total loss adjuster. Both of the links you posted basically said the same thing. That $500 is the amount they have reserved to pay for an appraiser. My car cas been considered a "total loss" 3 times now and I've kept it every time with a clean title.
This is who I use. Very reasonably priced and fairly quick. Tell him Nigel from AAA said hello.
