Also... double post... but I'm going to do an m50 swap since my m20 blew a headgasket and it will be roughly the same amount to fix the engine.

So... go to my thread and post: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=247009

$100 vs close to 1,000 is no where close dude. If you got tools and some time do the head gasket your self.

I agree and good luck getting your first swap done before Bimmerfest. Doesn't he need the M50 tranny too?

        Cheers,

When I did the head gasket on my lady's it took me like 3-5 hours and total cost was $90 for everything. My swap cost me $2000-$3000. And I did both myself. I say do the head gasket. Unless this is your excuse to do a swap lol

To do a M20 headgasket RIGHT it will cost you about $400 if you do it yourself. This includes a complete HG set, head bolts, and having the head cleaned, pressure tested, and resurfaced.

Doing a 24v swap RIGHT will cost you a LOT more.

              PS: I do M20 headgaskets. ;)

This is so true, I learned the hard way and ended up taking it apart again to check and surface the head. Do it the right way or do it again, unless you get lucky, or just get one of Matt's heads and feel the power. ;)

                Cheers,

Well, I am looking for an excuse to upgrade but it'll have to be a summer project now. I'm still taking apart my engine and it's taking me a while since its my first time doing so. Once I know the extent of the damage, I will know if I should just replace the headgasket or get a temporary m20 so I can make it to Bimmerfest.

$1000, from top to bottom. Including harness. I keep starter, exhaust & flywheel back.

So I'd have to get a new transmission as well? $1000 + new trans, clutch, etc = $1.5k +

I was quoted roughly the same price at Autobahn for everything. :|

I might just have to save up for a summer project at this rate. But for now, I guess I'll either have to repair the head and replace the headgasket or buy another m20 to replace my current one. Note, I haven't even gotten down to the headgasket yet since this is my first time taking apart my engine, so I probably won't know the damage till the end of the day or tomorrow morning.

Also... I need my car for work as well, no car means no work. Another issue is that I'm leading the SD caravan this year so I would like to have my car ready b4 then.

You understand Robert is selling a plug and play swap right? Autobahn is selling you stuff out of the parts bin.
