So my buddies car will engage in all gears but will not when the car is running. And if u start the car in gear with the clutch in it does t disengage the clutch so it won't turn over obviously. Slave?

Just went through this. Check the clutch pedal bracket.
If it's not cracked, follow Mike's advice for testing master/slave.

smog guys can be 'tards. Once had a smog guy try to run my e30 with the front wheels on the rollers. Yelled at him saying its rwd & he came back at me, "you sure?"
