I think once a car fails smog nobody really wants to touch it after .unless they fix it themselves
Just from my experience.

I've personally never dealt with this stuff till now so not sure how it normally goes but my buddy told me kinda the opposite and said to explain that I've tried smogging it before but didn't get it to pass o-o not sure why he says that but your reasoning sounds more reasonable. My guess is the tech he recommended me is vulnerable to pity and he wants me me to use my pity powers to get my car to pass 😅

I talked to my smog tech and he said vacuum leak or a bad cat. What kinda cat is on the car just a universal cat or one that is specific to your year make and model car?

A specific one for the car I believe. Last year I brought my old e30 in and it failed so the guy installed a new specific one which passed. I since then transferred everything over to my new shell.

Besides possible vacuum leaks besure on that cat,because if he installed a universal cat it may be bad too. Sometimes they will install a universal just to make it pass and they burn out quickly. Just double check the numbers stamped on the cat shield.

What year is the car? I think pre 1991 only existed 2-way cats, so a bad cat wouldn't explain higher NOx.

It's a 1990 but the car it came off was a 91 but same engine and exhaust as used in the 1991 car.

Still haven't had a chance to recheck for vacuum leaks but will do a smoke test hopefully. Not sure on the condition of the afm now but it was the same one used when my car passed a year ago but something mightve happened to it during it's year in storage. There's a way to test those, right?

Swap one with know good one with another friend and smoke test the car as well. Then pay to have a pre-test performed (Its worth the money to pay $20-$30 bucks)after you fix the problem first of course. One of the luxuries of owning 2 e30's is for this type of issue. But i don't have that anymore.
