we run a tunnel-mounted shifter in the lemon, currently with solid motor mounts (actually sections of steel square tube, long story) and stock trans mounts. we ran it with non-solid motor mounts before the current ones, and the shifter movement was absolutely minimal. how much do you think a motor moves in a turn, anyway?
ya with solid mounts my point is invalid. with rubber mounts the trans can move ~8 degrees left and right and 1/2" forward and backward. when the carrier is connected to the trans, it moves w/ it rather than the shift moving all around. the sift lever stays at the same angle in your hand. otherwise the shift lever moves around. i've driven 2 cars with them it does move around in a way that pisses me off. so either i have to live with that stupid ball coming out of the cup and a lower lever like i like or a higher lever and moves around but has a better ball joint.

just one more thing to buy. and most people dont know to get it and then have odd issues.

has nothing to do with clearing anything.

they have a steel cup that you screw in. then a nylon lower cup then ball goes in. then upper nylon cup. then washer then spring for unknown reason then washer then a locking clip. maybe they thing the spring will hold it in place. it doesnt. you can physically life the ball up inside the cup. just enough to be a pita

when I installed new ball joint plastic and replaced all rubber (even drilled out bottom of shifter) with delrin bushings I made. There was zero slop, shit is crazy. I might make my next set of bushings out of some specialized delrin engineered for our 500 ton mold machines, these bushings I made for work have pretty much zero wear with 24hour sliding for the last 4 years

you should try to install just the lever without the riser cup, then. The selector rod will hit the harmonic damper on the driveshaft if that's still installed.

the spring puts pressure on the ball so that it doesn't flop around. If there wasn't a spring and the upper/lower bushings were just clipped in, it would get looser as it wears.

sorry yes i know why the cup is there. i thought u were referring to the ball lifting as that was needed to clear the giubo. well the spring needs about 4x more force then.

I have had this shifter setup on my e30 for 8yrs, never had any issues with it. Although mine is first generation and doesnt use a spring in the shifter cup.

There is actually more benefit than that.

The selector rod is free to pivot at both ends, meaning it can only really deliver axial load (along the direction of the selector rod). Usually short shifters will just extend the lower portion of the shift lever which angles the selector rod. So when you shift 1-2 it's not only pushing the shift rod into the transmission, it's also pushing it up towards the top of the car. This creates extra friction and wear, and increases shift effort. By moving the pivot point up they can keep the selector rod flat, so it only pushes in and out (oh baby) instead of up and down.

If you're looking for a good shifter and don't want to buy an AKG for aesthetic purposes, get an auto-solutions shifter. Probably the best DD short shift kit I've ever driven.

Anyone know where i can buy a behr radiator in the Bay Area? Will getting a aftermarket one from allied auto parts be a bad idea?

Good job. Swapped in new harness and it was good to go?

Cut all the old connectors off the old harness along with some of the wiring and keep those connectors in yer tool box, trash the rest of the harness, guess it was too hacked up.
