M60 will cost just as much as an LS1 swap.

Oh and if you want to bar it you better make sure it's out of a 95 540i/6speed. You'll need the ECU and vin tags to match.

why out of a 95? Is that the m60b44 or something like that? but I doubt I can BAR a ls1. I'm still looking into BAR there was a BAR Ref in fairfield solano cc but I think they shut down or got cut.

95 is the last OBD1 M60 engine. Its an M60B40. You can't legally take an OBDII engine and convert it to OBD1. If you can get the 96+ engines to run on all the OBDII wiring and hardware then you can legalize it. But that requires running an OBD2 diagnostic port into the cabin and having all monitors set with the correct ECU and smog devices in place. Including but not limited to evap canisters and fuel vent valves, rear o2 sensors and the correct catalytic converters.

Oh I see. But I could always put the b44 head on the b40 right? I read it somewhere maybe on jgoods build. But I might be wrong

That OBDII thing goes the same with s52 swap. Is that correct?

You can do that yes, but it will not be California legal. It will work as an engine, as a piece of hardware, but it will not be compliant with California smog laws and you will not be able to BAR it.

You are correct about the S52.

Theoretically speaking I could bar it as a M60B40 and then put in the b44 after wards and wouldn't really have to worry about it get it BAR? Or do they stamp it or what not.

You get a sticker in your door jam. You can try and do that if you want, but the OBD1 will be a difficult enough swap on its own. You'll need these two part numbers for the catalysts 18 30 7 505 321 and 18 30 7 505 322 or two CA complaint catalytic converters. You'll also need to run 100% stock exhaust headers that have not been modified at all.

Geez guess I got more research to do. Thanks Danny for all the info. Gotta check what's available before I dive and buy franks m60 guide.

CA BAR is stupid.... Anything after 95 is more smog efficient than an m20.

CA should be paying us to do these swaps

Is running unmodified headers even possible in an E30? Or do they just have log manifolds... I forget.

I don't think it is possible actually.

run unmodified headers upside down, run complete exhaust hanging forward, no hood, ez.
