OBD1 E36 and E30 are identical as far as evap system goes, from what I can discern from the realoem part diagrams. Both have a fuel vapor expansion tank that returns condensed vapor to the fuel tank and sends gaseous vapor to the charcoal canister in the engine bay.
What you need to do for an S54 is to reroute the line exiting the vapor tank that normally heads for the e30 engine bay charcoal canister. Run it into the trunk or under the trunk(ref looks for parts to be in a close approximation to donor car location) with the evap tank -> charcoal line stepped up in diameter (see the schematic on evap system in my thread). You then route another hose from trunk to engine bay (or re-use the factory hose with a cut/splice, which goes to an E46 check valve that is connected to the DME. The third line from the charcoal canister is vented to atmosphere.
One additional thing is that you will need to wire in the leak diagnostics (DMTL) sensor, and depending on year it's a three or four wire plug. This is connected to the E46 charcoal canister, and the wiring runs straight to the DME and +12v power.
I'm not entirely convinced you will need to swap to the E36 OBD2 expansion tank, unless the DMTL monitor throws leak codes. Looking back on it, I don't think I needed to go to that length, and another E36 friend will be testing that theory pretty soon.
People have documented E30 OBD2 S52/M52 swaps in California, so however they solved the evap system is what you'll need to do, with the only difference being wiring the DMTL instead of the E36 OBD2 canister sensor/check valve and fuel filler pressure sensor.Last edited by Bimmerman325i; 03-21-2016, 10:21 PM.

Thanks for going into detail. I've heard it's basically an expensive S52 swap with more software issues, you are basically confirming that.
I'd really like to find an E30 owner who has tackled all of this. I know there's at least 1 BAR legal E30 M3 S54 finished. It just seems like most people end up with a V8 instead of the S54.Drive it hard. Maintain it well.
