I should be getting my m50tu on Friday. I know it's not the greatest engine, but hopefully with a free flowing (catless) exhaust, s52 cams, and a tune, it'll make close to 200whp.

S52 cams? Yer gonna need the cam trays and lifters to go with that. Better off with s50 cams.

s50 then. I was unsure of the difference. I'm getting the whole bottom end minus head and accessories. It was pulled from a running car. I'd like to just clean everything up, replace the rings and whatever's involved in that so the compression is like new, and put it together with a cleaned up head. Is this a decent plan?

Depends on what yer paying for the block... Rebuild can be very pricey, the head is also pricey. But if you want guaranteed healthy strong motor, rebuild is the way to go! I have an m50 with a blown headgasket I would sell cheap if you want to get into a rebuild.
