Ahh , poor connection. So the wiring was making just enough connection to allow higher amperage to jump across the connection when you used an external source but not enough connection to just allow your battery to provide enough current.
Heat builds up and makes the connection even worse as the wire expands slightly.

Yup that sounds like it would do it as well. A bad ground(s) would also do it.

I thought it was a bad ground for the battery, but I tried the wire from my grey car and still got nothing.

Got it thought, so that's all that matters now.
