Addiction Motors in Emeryville had a Monster 900 Dark on consignment, for $3800, but they're moving- if it comes back to their new location i'll let you know- was thinking about it myself.

a 900 is way too much power for a new rider. i only weigh 160lbs so 600 or less would be best

I am a new rider, but believe I could handle a 900. I weigh 205ish though. I have lots of self control, so I tend not to go to crazy when it comes to motorsports and what not.

yeah, and monsters are air-cooled, so they're not crazy high compression- just saying, i think that bike's overpriced.

Man, my dad has been riding for 20+ years and never had an accident. If you are a safe rider, stay aware, and put yourself in a safe riding environment you should be fine. Of course there is always the concern of traffic, but learn the times there is less traffic, take different roads etc.
