No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them. -

I've seen a super clean alpine ix late model parked on the air side quite a few times. I always park my alpine late model up against the air side fence, but it's not an ix. There is a super nice alpine E36 that frequents the air side lot too. I had a talk with an alpine E39 M5 when I was in the track car at the Jackson light last weekend. He went into landside also.JOY IS AN E30...

I'd like to say I have the 12,731st post on this thread, that's a lot.
Anyhoodle, has anyone ever done a E36, Z3, or any other kind of rack swap here? I need a new rack and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for another regular OEM E30 rack but I am way too inexperienced to do a rack swap on an airbag car. I heard you can raise the rack and not notch out your firewall but if I have to notch it out I don't have the tools and I don't know where I would get another plate to seal it in.1991 325i Calypso Coupe

It's actually not that hard, you need a dremel to cut out the firewall, and there is numerous guides on how to cut the knuckle down. the hard part is making a plate to seal it like you said I don't know how you would go about doing that. Dropping the rack is actually easy if you bend the two tabs holding it up, after that its pretty straight forward, also it was a pain to put the rack back on the splines.I'd like to say I have the 12,731st post on this thread, that's a lot.

edit: also you wouldn't want to raise the rack, because your going to change the geometry of the tie rods, there is also spacers a guy on E30tech made which helpLast edited by ltz Viper; 10-17-2013, 12:02 PM.

The job isn't too hard, but it's not my favorite either. Especially if your E30 is like every other E30 and has a million gallons of oil smeared all over the underside of the car. Did one for brad a few years ago and it made a world of difference in how the car performed.
