Have you been off-roading here yet? It is so fun and I have no idea why.

Up the street from me was a large forest space that was fun to drive in (and probably illegal) until they closed it off. I've never really explored much around the state and with gas at 3.29 a gallon I don't think I will...I used to dirt bike quite a bit around here and that was fun. Also, I lived in Australia for 4 years (although I was young) and we drove across it in a 2000 turbo-diesel toyota prado and that was quite the experience.

        Sounds like fun.

There are hundreds of awesome off-roading trails in Colorado. But you are right, you get about 5mpg, lol.

There's plenty of off-roading to be had... mostly desert type terrain, no mud or water. I spend most of my time racing through dried riverbeds, but there's plenty of rock crawling and sand hills to be had. And if you check out this thread, you'll see the top secret rally course my buddies and I discovered (where my sig pic was taken). PM me if you want directions to the good stuff.

you have no idea why off-roading is fun, or you have no idea why he hasn't been off-roading here yet?

I think he has no idea why off-roading is so fun.

It sounds so boring and bleh, but once you do it....

yeah, I wasn't expecting it to be fun. But being outside, windows down, fresh air, pretending your Jeep is a tank and rocks are little villages...it's just fun.

ha ha! The jeep actually survived quite well, like Mike said, my E30 would have probably bent in half if I pulled the same stunt he did!

Jeeps are built very well. Well cherokees at least.

I hear they have weak suspension links.

The front upper and lower CA mounts will need to be replaced (40$ for an entire control arm) at some point and ball joints can get clunky like any car overtime. But there is no obvious weak FRAME points like E30s where the rear shock mounts suck, sway bars tear out, E36 front strut mounts, etc.

From the hours I've spent underneath looking at the suspension wondering what will break, I'd say the weak points are where the control arms attach to the unibody, just like any time anything mounts to any unibody (full frames FTW). But I've beat the living daylights out of it constantly for years with no big issues.

I have heard from some buddies back in MD that the frame rails can crack fairly easily and that they should be boxed before undertaking any serious off-roading.
