wasted spark conversion will these coils work? $30 for 3 vs msd $150 for 3
building on a budget at this point, I live in Minnesota and my roommate is selling his house along with his 1000sf garage in 3 months. I have a spare motor built and ready to install. Trying to get all these parts asap for a good deal. I understand quality is important, but sometimes I am suspicious of overpriced parts when I see 50 positive reviews on something that looks identical. I paid $270 last night for msd coils and wires....wondering if I should cancel my order and save $125
Quality brand OE parts are where it's at. General aftermarket stuff is junk.
The OE test stuff properly and parts lasts better in the heat and vibration.
I'm still not really sold on WS I have it but it didn't do much. If the ecu can handle it might as well get individual coils as all the cool kids have it
Wasted spark makes for nice packaging i suppose. I bought a set of the same coils in the opening post (but genuine ones off a commodore), but to buy a decent bosch ignitor to run them was more than what i found 8 x LS1 coils which have internal ignitors and run straight off the megasquirt.
I went with individual coils (ls1) but run them in wasted spark (no cam sensor). So at least i look like a cool kid.
For important stuff such as this I tend to go OE as other's have said, but I wouldn't mind a $30 lesson in case this one fails. So, in my opinion I would try it out.
The factory setup is reasonably neat. Multi coil setups often cover the valve cover and hide the nice finish a raised letters though I've seen some that don't

Agreed. Will those ones work? Probably. Will they last? Probably not.
The knock off versions of these products don't go through the same rigorous testing required by the automotive OEMS, so although the design may be similar, they cheap out wherever they can and usually have little to no engineering behind them to validate the changes.
As long as you don't mind buying new coils in 10,000 miles, go for it, it'll at least get the car up and running. Just don't expect them to last as long as an OE coil.
If I recall, the factory GM coils sit right on the spark computer, which has spade connectors
that stick up out of it.
Duplicating those without the box they sit on is kind of clunky.
Dare I suggest you hit the local self- serve junkyards? Saves money, and as long as you
don't get something like later E46 coils, they tend to be just fine, if they're OE. Coils are tough...
and at junkyard prices, you can afford a spare or 2.
