I can't get enough of these and the article brings up some good points. I though the M3 was a cool concept for BMW but these are another level. When you consider we didn't get the M tech 1 here in the US and BMW knew they wouldn't sell many @ $40-45K. It's like they were paying homage to the E30. The leather stitched pulls/cards/ashtrays/trunkliner, m tech 2 bodykit, special badges/door sills, m tech suspension, etc. It was cool BMW went the extra mile to bring these here and in convertible form. Only an M3 convertible would have been more expensive.

              Hey Rob

I've chatted with both you and Barry about the car. Rest assured I'm being careful. I hope that comes across in the thread.

Already explained my reasons for selling - too many cars and not enough time or garage space. This car's stored in a climate controlled garage off site, but that's not something I want to do permanently.

I have a sale pending on my m42 turbo, and my other vert's MT1 conversion is sitting there waiting too. Then there's the IX which needs a full rebuild... my attic's completely full with E30 bits :-) Realistically it would be 2-3 years before I finished the MT2.

well said. and your example's had a turbo retrofit. clearly the buyer certainly doesn't need to give up power / performance projects - engine swap, turbo etc.

the macaoblau is also special as Barry can attest. it's a beautiful color that was used with the Europameister M3 Evo cars.

I actually tried to buy my vert without the turbo if the seller lowered the price enough but it was already on and he didn't want to take the time to change it back to stock so I picked it up anyway. Wasn't a big deal to me and the extra power is awesome. The M tech package was about extra sport/luxury without the M badge. The cars weren't known for their engines like the E30 M3 was where BMW made the effort to create the S14.

answers below, but do check the build thread brah - lotsa info.

NOTE I HAVE A VERBAL OFFER ON THE TABLE RIGHT NOW. Full asking + what I paid for the new valance and Evo cloth. Deal expected to close on Feb 10.

UPDATE: offer is still active. we're supposed to close on the 21st now.

A/C was deleted by the cali owner. he bypassed the heater core too which as you can imagine is not kosher up here, even for a car that's never to see snow/salt. A reman A/C will set you back about $150. I was already planning to redo the system as I successfully rebuilt my other vert's last summer. It's not that hard and there are excellent DIYs on this forum for that.

top has a tear in it and needs replacement. received that way by PO. Cali owner sold the car on ebay and indicated top was torn at that time.

top mechanism is disconnected from the motor. I did hear the motors work but my working assumption when I bought it was to replace the entire top mechanism and top. I have a couple of deck lid motors, one top motor and a top motor harness including the control module. these DO NOT come with the car though.

I have more info for interested buyers. I had budgeted about $3200 for repair/rebuild, plus a kchinn interior and paint. I also have a package deal on the interior I can offer the buyer (basically we joint order 2 car interiors together). I was strongly interested in preserving the hand painted dealer m-stripes but haven't figured out how. Was gonna cross the bridge after all repairs were done.
