My M54 originally came with a 3 1/2" MAF and a larger throttle body than the OBD1 motors.

Even with OBD1 components, I'm making more HP than a stock M54.

I've done a ton of datalogging on it and found that the MAF isn't getting close to saturation (plenty of signal headroom left) but I am starting to draw a slight vacuum in the manifold at higher rpms. That is a result of the entire intake tract, including throttle body, MAF and air filter.

I suspect that the combination of the larger, stock throttle body and 3 1/2 MAF may yield me a few ponies.

Why would they give the 3.0 M54 a larger TB and MAF than the stock S50? Must be a reason...

They probably thought it was better so they used it. M54s are Drive By Wire, so it might also have something to do with that.

With higher octane fuel, or ionic sensing ignition, there would still be significant gains to be made.
No, what the MAF does is give tuners something else to charge you for. Maybe it flows a little more air, it probably doesn't hurt.

You can get whatever mixture you want with whatever MAF (and injectors, as long as they are big enough) you want.

I am also looking at an electric power steering pump. It will give me another 5+ hp across the entire power band.

Cut down the elbox 3 inches, clock your maf connector to the 2 o clock position and run the 3 in cutoff in front of the MAF to the filter. This will result in better flow and allow the MAF to meter correctly

Lazy tuning maybe? Maybe they did it because a faster throttle response makes people think the car is faster? I never bought it myself, I'm still running the stock MAF and injectors. I don't need more fuel until I can get a lot more air. For that I need cams.

did you reset your dme with a peak reset tool or equivalant? i don't care how many injectors or harnesses you replace, if you don't reset the code in your dme, it will never go away. i think it is very common to see injector 1 failure with a swap. i had it too. in everything i read above, i didn't see anything about you mentioning resetting your codes.

I would say you'll see 10-15hp. Maybe a few more than you'd see from the chip alone.

It's a nice change for sure.

hmm, not quite worth the ~$500 imo. I'll rock it as is for a while longer and work on cleaning up the engine bay for my next project.

Who does that and how they do it?

I bought 6 24# injector from Fuel injector connection on Ebay. it was 129$ for 6. And the HFM was 130$ from a BF.c member. 260 + shipping isn't that bab for 10-15 hp!
