Can cams be installed incorrectly?

Update: My entire head was rebuilt, new lifters, new valves, head was machined checked, new valve stem seals, rebuilt vanos (again); and the motor STILL has a problem. I am stumped!

The car drives perfectly with the Vanos unplugged. However, with it plugged in, the car still has that horrible metal clunking sound and the car looses power. I dont understand and neither does my buddy (JRdeamicis) working on the car.

I am thinking of possibly parting the motor and starting again. Or converting the motor to a non-vanos unless somebody is genius enough to know what this is. But there seriously has NEVER been another S5x/M5x vanos motor like this.

Did you test the vanos travel?

Yes... Its fine. Travel was perfect with both vanoses. Car runs excellently with Vanos disconnected, but has an ugly noise with loss of power when Vanos is connected. Seriously... I would instantly paypal 100 dollars to anyone who can tell me what can solve this problem. I wouldnt doubt that this problem would stump over 95% of BMW master techs out there.

Have any pictures of the cams? Im betting your intake cam gear is loose/fubared.
