this is what I have currently. Not the best, but it works. I have a Kamotors intake enroute, so its a temporary situation at best.

I'm new to the platform, but I did notice an awful lot of set-ups with the Filter Element bolted directly to the MAF (most notably the 3.5 HFM). Can you explain to me why this is efficient?

Working with the e46 platform, we obviously have a little more room in the bay...But I'm running a long tube intake with a filter element tucked into the bumper. Significantly more air is read by my MAF because the flow is smoothed out on it's way from the Filter to the MAF. Others have implemented a Velocity stack-type element with a larger filter attached in front and a length of silicone between the element and the MAF.

Just curious because it seems like there may be better ways to route the filter...especially just leaving it open in the bay...but really wondering how the 3.5 HFM really works and if any of what I mentioned above is even necessary.

    Cheers!

Here's what I made one afternoon. It's made from aluminum sheet metal and an engine bay gasket I found in my garage. I'd like to take it out and paint it black, but it works very well at keeping heat out. If you look beside my ABS pump you'll see some 3" tubing that takes air from the front brake duct.

Non-ABS E30s can fit the E36 Intake no problem into that space with some very slight trimming on the bottom of the intake.

If you relocate the ABS you can fit it. And you can just put the ABS on PASS shelf.

    Just FFT

Ya, Danny passed with just a K&N filter on his MAF.

Both intake set-ups aren't very efficient. Your first one is a hot-air, short ram set-up. Then you have the e36 airbox, with a nasty restriction in the intake boot.
